What is alprostadil?

Alprostadil (Caverject, Edex, MUSE) is available as an injectable solution or a penile suppository.

The injectable solution is administered directly into the penis 5–20 minutes before sexual activity and can be used up to three times per week, with at least 24 hours between injections.

MUSE (Medicated Urethral System for Erections) involves inserting a suppository into the urethra 5–10 minutes before intercourse. It should not be used more than twice within a 24-hour period.

Common side effects of alprostadil include penile and testicular pain, as well as a burning sensation in the urethra.
